Arnette's Barbershop was founded by Charles Arnette in 1945 in Carbondale, Illinois, back when barbershops were more than just a place to get a haircut; they also hosted community meetings for civil rights activists who were fighting for change. The barbershop has remained thriving and relevant to the community even after 75 years, making it one of the oldest Black-owned businesses in the area. The title of this work is "A Safe Place" because, over the years, Musawwir says the barbershop has been a haven for men and boys to share stories. "Every time I go in and get my haircut, I have great conversations. Nobody ever got shot, nobody ever got beat up, nobody ever got hurt. It's always a safe place for dialogue."

Mural featuring a portrait of Charles Bear, a person holding a microphone, and a group of diverse people. Text indicates it is part of a mural about community topics such as education, religion, music, business, and sports, with the partially visible word 'ARNE'TTE'S' at the top.
