At the height of Covid several communities in southern Illinois chose to invest in public murals as a way of building community cohesion and supporting an outdoor – and therefore Covid-safe – arts economy. One of these communities was Carterville. As one of their citizens expressed, “An idea turned into a meeting, a meeting turned into fundraising, fundraising turned into a plan, and the plan turned into a beautiful story. The final product is Perfection.” A series of murals transformed the flat white walls of a self-storage facility into a small town street of charming brick buildings, complete with flowers in every window and storefront. The project was designed by Kris Killman and painted by many community helpers.

Murals of a flower shop with potted flowers, sunflowers, and hanging plants, red and white striped awning, brick walls, and a door with an "We're OPEN" sign.
A brick building with arched window flower boxes, next to a white building with garage doors, under a clear blue sky.
