Funding supports artists, community programming, and Southern Illinois’ creative economy
CARBONDALE, IL — Artspace Southern Illinois is accepting applications for the 2027 Southern Arts Fund (SAF), with $30,000 available in grants ranging from $1,500 to $3,000. Applications are open through December 7, 2026, for Southern Illinois artists and nonprofit organizations proposing arts and cultural programming.
Administered by Artspace Southern Illinois with support from the Illinois Arts Council and other generous donors, SAF helps bring cultural events, youth arts programs, community performances, and public art to communities throughout the region. All SAF-supported events and programs must be free and open to the public.
“Talent is everywhere in Southern Illinois, but access to resources is often limited,” said Dr. Chuck Benya, CEO & Executive Director of Artspace Southern Illinois. “These grants help artists turn ideas into public experiences while supporting the work behind them. Investing in local creativity strengthens our communities and helps build a more sustainable creative economy.”
Arts funding helps sustain a network of artists, teaching artists, performers, venues, and local suppliers. Public programs can also attract visitors who shop, dine, and explore nearby businesses. In rural communities, even a modest grant can make the difference between a promising idea and a project that brings people together.
“The creative economy is an essential part of Southern Illinois’ future,” said Dr. Kirk Overstreet, Board President of Artspace Southern Illinois. “Supporting artists and cultural organizations helps our communities retain talent, strengthen local identity, and create places where people want to live, work, and visit. We are grateful to the Illinois Arts Council and our donors for making these investments possible.”
Previous grant recipients are welcome to apply. All organizational applicants must include a cash match in their proposed budgets: 25% for organizations funded zero to two times and 50% for organizations funded three or more times. Individual artists are exempt. View the application and full guidelines.
Applicants seeking assistance are invited to attend either of two drop-in sessions at the 304 Cultural Arts Center, 304 W. Walnut Street, Carbondale: Wednesday, November 4, at 5 p.m., or Saturday, November 14, at 11 a.m.
Applications must be submitted electronically by December 7, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Awards will be announced during the first week of January 2027, and all funds must be used by August 31, 2027.
